  1. Why did you choose this photograph? (composition: color, subject, light; and/or subject matter: the memory of the person or time)

Subject Matter. Alchohal was an escape many people used.

  1. What kinds of information does the photograph contain? What story does it tell?

It shows men gathered at an illegal saloon, one without an alcohol license. These places were usually cheaper than the legal venues, and the alcohol was needed as an escape from the drudgery of life.

  1. What is the mood or tone of the picture?

Cheerfulness, as though it’s in a dark hole, it’s somewhere where they can relax

  1. What does it reveal about the setting—location, time period, time of day?

It is likely night, when they don’t have to work. It is in some basement or somewhere not easily accesable.

  1. On our class blog, post your photograph and answer the following questions:

What does the photo reveal about the economic and social problems created by urbanization in the late 19th Century? What, if any, technological innovations and political solutions were necessary to address these problems?

People were generally unhappy as most lived in poverty, and in unpleasant, crowded conditions. This was the result of urbanization, and though this in itself was a result of technological innovations, more were necessary to make living standards better.
