1. Why did you choose this photograph? (composition: color, subject, light; and/or subject matter: the memory of the person or time)

I chose it due to the overall feeling and ideas I gathered from this picture. I felt that it was a good representation of the quality of life throughout that time period.

2. What kinds of information does the photograph contain? What story does it tell?

It shows a man’s sleeping quarters. Even in black and white you can see how dirty and un-kept the living spaces were. I would not be surprised if many people caught disease from spending too much time in a place such as this.

3. What is the mood or tone of the picture?

Very solemn, the man does not look happy. There is minimal lighting, and the man is smoking. He looks quite unsatisfied with current position.

4. What does it reveal about the setting—location, time period, time of day?

It looks like the mid 1920

5. What does the photo reveal about the economic and social problems created by urbanization in the late 19th Century? What, if any, technological innovations and political solutions were necessary to address these problems?

Overcrowding and unsanitary conditions created medical issues in terms of how safe the living quarters were. Sewers had to be created, as well as running water, in addition to a method of circulating air throughout the buildings
