Mulberry Bend, New York.
I chose this photo because it looks like it sums up immigration as a whole. From taking a glance at the photograph one can see the people roaming the streets working very hard and they look very focused on getting their task complete. One can see the cleanliness of the street to be below average. It seems as if there is no organization in the streets and that it is every man for himself out there just like immigration was during that era.

Immigration continues to be such a source of conflict in the US because it literally happens everyday. If one takes a close look into society as a whole today, unless one is native american, everyone is an immigrant. Immigration does not only bring negatives to society as it is mapped out to do. But it brings fourth positive affect as well as it did in the 19th century. They brought other traditions, religions, and other techniques that were acquired by the United States and made them a better country as a whole.

It shows men gathered at an illegal saloon, one without an alcohol license. These places were usually cheaper than the legal venues, and the alcohol was needed as an escape from the drudgery of life.

  1. What is the mood or tone of the picture?

Cheerfulness, as though it’s in a dark hole, it’s somewhere where they can relax

  1. What does it reveal about the setting—location, time period, time of day?

It is likely night, when they don’t have to work. It is in some basement or somewhere not easily accesable.

  1. On our class blog, post your photograph and answer the following questions:

What does the photo reveal about the economic and social problems created by urbanization in the late 19th Century? What, if any, technological innovations and political solutions were necessary to address these problems?

People were generally unhappy as most lived in poverty, and in unpleasant, crowded conditions. This was the result of urbanization, and though this in itself was a result of technological innovations, more were necessary to make living standards better.

7-cent house

1. Why did you choose this photograph? (composition: color, subject, light; and/or subject matter: the memory of the person or time)
I liked it because there were no people in it and it was the cleanest looking photograph in the slide show. It is also much brighter than the rest.

2. What kinds of information does the photograph contain? What story does it tell?

I shows the living conditions in the 7-cent lodging house on Pell street. It was kind of like a hotel.

3. What is the mood or tone of the picture?

Emptiness. There is no one there but you can imagine it being full at night.

4. What does it reveal about the setting—location, time period, time of day?
It is day time in the photo but it was probably full at night.

5. On our class blog, post your photograph and answer the following questions:

Welcome to Modern US History, Block 6

Hi guys,

"Guys" is actually accurate for this class as you have seen! In my 15 years of teaching I have never had an all-female or all-male class; have you guys been in a class with only boys ever? What difference, if any, do you anticipate?

On another note, welcome to the class...I am looking forward to some of the new content we're doing this year; helping you successfully navigate the Junior Thesis process; guiding you through some compelling historical periods in our country; and, having some fun along the way.

Again, welcome and I am looking forward to a a great year for each of you.
