7-cent house

1. Why did you choose this photograph? (composition: color, subject, light; and/or subject matter: the memory of the person or time)
I liked it because there were no people in it and it was the cleanest looking photograph in the slide show. It is also much brighter than the rest.

2. What kinds of information does the photograph contain? What story does it tell?

I shows the living conditions in the 7-cent lodging house on Pell street. It was kind of like a hotel.

3. What is the mood or tone of the picture?

Emptiness. There is no one there but you can imagine it being full at night.

4. What does it reveal about the setting—location, time period, time of day?
It is day time in the photo but it was probably full at night.

5. On our class blog, post your photograph and answer the following questions:

What does the photo reveal about the economic and social problems created by urbanization in the late 19th Century?
It shows that not everyone lived in houses adn some payed seven cents a night to sleep in a nice bed.
What, if any, technological innovations and political solutions were necessary to address these problems?
Bunkbeds were clearly invented and it looks like nice living compared to the rest of the pictures in the slideshow.
