The Blind Begger

  1. Why did you choose this photograph? (composition: color, subject, light; and/or subject matter: the memory of the person or time)
I chose this picture because the picture is only based on the blind man, and it is centered on this one man.

What kinds of information does the photograph contain? What story does it tell?
This photograph tells me that it was survival of the fittest in America at this time, and that he was alone, begging, and no one there to help him.

What is the mood or tone of the picture?
The mood of the picture is sad and demonstrates loneliness.

What does it reveal about the setting—location, time period, time of day?
It shows that the setting was very dirty, and the roads were filled with gravel and dirt.

On our class blog, post your photograph and answer the following questions:

What does the photo reveal about the economic and social problems created by urbanization in the late 19th Century? What, if any, technological innovations and political solutions were necessary to address these problems?
The photo reveals that people had socially been dependent on other people, and if someone like this blind man showed up and the blind man had nothing to give back because of his loss of sight, then he would be left alone and no one would care about him. This demonstrates survival of the fittest. Obviously no one could help his eyesight, but socially people could help him and care about the less fortunate who couldn’t help him or herself.
